Valeo i-Stars Stop/Start Systems

Discover the system that’s reducing fuel consumption and emissions in most modern vehicles

What Is Stop/Start Systems

An Overview of Valeo Stop/Start Systems

What Is Stop/Start Systems and How Does It Work?

As automakers aim to achieve more stringent emissions standards with each new generation of vehicles, car stop/start systems have become an integral part of most modern vehicles. But does Stop/Start save fuel? The answer is a resounding yes. In this 43-minute webinar, we will explore the different types of Valeo i-Stars - Stop/Start systems and how they work.

What Is Stop/Start Technology?

When your vehicle comes to a complete stop, you may notice the engine shuts off until you press the accelerator again. This is caused by the Stop/Start system, which turns off the engine to save fuel and quickly restarts it once needed. This system is useful for automakers but also benefits drivers, especially in city driving. Alongside the car Stop/Start system, many other solutions have been developed recently, like 48v systems. Still, since Stop/Start systems have been around for nearly two decades, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with them as you will likely encounter them in your garage.

What Are the Different Types of Stop/Start Systems?

There are two main types of Stop/Start systems. We will go over the main differences and the advantages of each, including performance, intrusiveness, and lifetime. You’ll learn about the components of each system and how the car Stop/Start system affects the engine architecture. We’ll explain how the approaches of different automakers can affect how the system works.. You’ll also discover which system is more common on recent vehicles and why.

How Does Stop/Start Technology Work?

We will explain how the different Stop/Start system components work together to stop and start the engine while you drive. You’ll learn how the engine control unit ensures that the stop and start engine system can work safely and what conditions can prevent it from functioning. We’ll explain the different sensors necessary for the system and how they work. You’ll also learn about the special batteries used with these systems and why they are not interchangeable.

Troubleshooting

If you are working on a vehicle with a potential Stop/Start technology-related fault, we will provide our recommendations to check for faults and repair a Valeo Stop/Start system. You’ll learn which tools you need to work on Valeo ReStart and iStars, and what guidelines to respect whilst performing the repair. You’ll discover what can cause a fault that will deactivate the stop-start function and when to check for fault codes. We’ll tell you which components may need to be reset or re-synchronised during the repair process.
