What technologies are used to keep electrified vehicles from overheating?

How do automotive A/C compressors work?

An Introduction to Automotive HVAC Systems and A/C Compressors

How do automotive A/C compressors work?

Cooling & Air management technologies are critical components of internal combustion engines, but what systems are used in electrified vehicles? A variety of systems are used, depending on whether the vehicle is a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or battery-electric. In this 17-minute free webinar, you will learn about the major battery cooling systems in electric vehicles and hybrids.

EV Battery Cooling: The Basics

Batteries are very sensitive to changes in temperature, and excessive heat or extreme cold can cause performance issues and even damage the battery. We’ll explore how batteries are affected by temperature and how technology can be used to mitigate it. You’ll discover a variety of methods to dissipate heat away from the battery and which technologies are ideal for hybrids, battery electric, and other types of electrified vehicles.

Thermal Management

The technology used to cool down batteries has evolved over the past few decades, becoming more and more efficient over time. We’ll explore three major types of battery cooling systems in electric vehicles and hybrids, and the advantages of each one. We’ll also look at the downsides of each technology and which solutions are the most promising for the future. You’ll learn the difference between active and passive, indirect and direct, and air versus liquid cooling.

Cooling Challenges

What are the main challenges facing manufacturers in improving charging performance without overheating the battery? How can improvements in electric car battery cooling lead to faster charging times? We’ll explore these questions plus the surprising reason why one older cooling technology could start appearing in more new models. You’ll also learn about innovative new systems that combine air conditioning and a battery cooling system for electric vehicles. The ideal battery cooling system depends on the vehicle. At the end of this webinar, you’ll have a better understanding of why a manufacturer chose a certain technology for a specific model.

Troubleshooting

Electrified vehicles are a rapidly growing category, which is only expected to grow as we transition away from Internal Combustion Engines. This shift will drive the demand for mechanics familiar with high-voltage systems, which require special training to handle safely. At the end of this webinar, you’ll understand the basic functioning of a variety of cooling technologies you’re likely to encounter in your garage. We’ll tell you the fault codes for EV battery cooling systems, so you can quickly diagnose whether an issue is caused by the battery cooler or another electric component.
