Truck Radiator for Engine Cooling System
Valeo’s aftermarket truck engine cooling range benefits from Valeo original equipment (OE) expertise.
The most important component of a truck engine cooling module is the radiator. The radiator is the main heat exchanger, located at the front of the engine or, if air conditioning is installed, behind the condenser. It transfers heat from the engine to the ambient air through the coolant.
How Does a Truck Radiator Work?
A truck radiator works the same as a radiator found in passenger cars, but is designed for a larger engine. The main function of the radiator is to redistribute engine heat so that it neither gets cold nor does it overheat. This function relies mainly on the radiator design. When the hot cooling liquid passes into the radiator, the heat contained in the liquid escapes through its walls. Once the liquid has cooled, it returns to the engine.
The radiator shall maintain adequate cooling capacity for the truck to maintain optimal engine operation. It allows fresh coolant to reach auxiliary appliances, such as the oil cooler and intercooler. It maintains the coolant qualities (pressurisation, degassability) and ensures the airtightness under radiator pressure to withstand vibration and twisting, withstand engine pressure oscillation and corrosion due to environmental conditions or spent coolant.
Valeo truck radiators for the aftermarket benefit from strong expertise in cooling & air management:
- Products of the same quality as the original equipment (OE)
- Innovative solutions for lower fuel consumption and lower NOx and CO2 emissions
- High density of tubes and fins
- High brazing quality that allows optimal durability
- A connection from the radiator to the plate, which allows a reduction in vibration-caused failures
- A label allowing for traceability and easier identification
Valeo Info
A minor malfunction or a slight lack of cooling system maintenance increases truck fuel consumption and can even cause irreversible damage to the engine. This is why truck cooling systems must be maintained regularly. Control of the entire cooling system is required to avoid unplanned and costly repairs, as well as radiator or intercooler failures. Proper maintenance of the truck radiator is crucial. The amount of liquid in the radiator should be frequently checked and adjusted to avoid overheating or cracking. The radiator cap is also essential. It keeps the system clean and maintains proper pressure in the system.

What’s the Difference between a Radiator and an Intercooler?
The radiator and the intercooler work together in the cooling system of trucks equipped with a turbo, but they have different functions. The bus radiator causes the thermal exchange of air with the coolant passing through its structure. But the intercooler plays a different role. It was developed to reduce the temperature of the inlet air and combustion gas mixture. That means one part does not replace the other: the radiator and intercooler complement each other. Together they optimise combustion and boost the engine's efficiency without increasing the system's thermal load.
