EGR Valves - The Easiest Way to Perform a Bench Test to Check Functionality

Learn about the different types of EGR, how they work, how to test them, and more in this free webinar.

The best way to test an EGR Valve

Learn Everything You Need to Know from Our Resident Expert

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems have been around since the Euro 2 standards. Still, the part has evolved to become much more efficient and effective at reducing emissions over the years. In this 20-minute free webinar, you will learn about the evolution and different types of EGRs, how to test them for leaks, and best practices for dealing with EGR valves.

What is an EGR valve and what does it do

We’ll start this webinar with a quick refresher on Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valves and their function. You’ll learn about the role of Nitrogen in the engine’s exhaust system and how EGR valves help reduce NOx emissions and improve engine efficiency. We’ll show you a basic diagram of the gas recirculation process to quickly explain how the system works.

Need for EGR

The Euro emissions standards have slowly increased requirements for emissions reduction equipment. EGRs became necessary with the Euro 2 standards, but EGRs have evolved over the years, moving from one type of technology to another. We’ll show you how EGR performance has vastly increased with each Euro standard, and we’ll explain what technologies were instrumental in making that happen.

Two different types

As the technology evolved, EGRs went from pneumatic valves to electronically actuated ones. We’ll give a walkthrough of each type of EGR’s function, and we’ll explain their differences. You’ll learn about the three main components of electronic EGRs and how they interact with the engine management system. You’ll also discover the parts of pneumatic EGRs and which parts all EGR valves share. Finally, we’ll tell you how to identify the different types of EGR and avoid fitting the wrong kind to a vehicle.

How to test for functionality

Depending on the EGR type, there are different tests you can perform to check EGR functionality. We will explain how to perform common EGR tests for both pneumatic and electronic EGRs. We’ll tell you what tools you’ll need to carry out the test, such as testing the EGR valve with a multimeter, and what precautions to take to use the different equipment properly. You’ll also learn what to look for to know that an EGR is properly sealed for either type of EGR valve.

Best practices for handling EGRs.

EGRs can break in a variety of ways if they’re mishandled. We’ll give you six simple tips to avoid damaging the part. All of these tips apply to diesel engines and most of them to petrol. After the webinar, we’ll include technical service bulletins on EGR valve contamination and premature failure of the EGR valve. We also recommend our webinar on the main causes of EGR failure.

Valeo EGRs and related parts.

Valeo is a leader in EGR systems and has been awarded the PACE award for engine innovation. Valeo also supplies full EGR systems (valve and heat exchanger.) The Valeo EGR products cover all major automakers. If you need to find a specific part like an EGR valve or cooler, search the Tech@ssist part finder portal by part number, VIN, or vehicle model.
